چکیده

A number of pattern recognition tasks, e.g., face verification, can be boiled down to classification or clustering of unit length directional feature vectors whose distance can be simply computed by their angle. In this paper, we propose the von Mises-Fisher (vMF) mixture model as the theoretical foundation for an effective deep-learning of such directional features and derive a novel vMF Mixture Loss and its corresponding vMF deep features. The proposed vMF feature learning achieves the characteristics of discriminative learning, i.e., compacting the instances of the same class while increasing the distance of instances from different classes. Moreover, it subsumes a number of popular loss functions as well as an effective method in deep learning, namely normalization. We conduct extensive experiments on face verification using 4 different challenging face datasets, i.e., LFW, YouTube faces, CACD and IJB-A. Results show the effectiveness and excellent generalization ability of the proposed approach as it achieves stateof-the-art results on the LFW, YouTube faces and CACD datasets and competitive results on the IJB-A dataset.

Hierarchical 3-D von Mises-Fisher Mixture Model

 In this paper, we propose a complete method for clustering data, which are in the form of unit vectors. The solution consists of a distribution based clustering algorithm with the assumption of a generative model. In the model, the data is generated from a finite statistical mixture model based on the von Mises-Fisher (vMF) distribution. Initially, Bregman soft clustering algorithm is applied...

Directional Mixture Models and Optimal Estimation of the Mixing Density

The authors develop consistent nonparametric estimation techniques for the directional mixing density. Classical spherical harmonics are used to adapt Euclidean techniques to this directional environment. Minimax rates of convergence are obtained for rotationally invariant densities verifying various smoothness conditions. It is found that the difference in smoothness between the Laplace, the G...

On von-mises fisher mixture model in text-independent speaker identification

This paper addresses text-independent speaker identification (SI) based on line spectral frequencies (LSFs). The LSFs are transformed to differential LSFs (MLSF) in order to exploit their boundary and ordering properties. We show that the square root of MLSF has interesting directional characteristics implying that their distribution can be modeled by a mixture of von-Mises Fisher (vMF) distrib...

Asymmetric biclustering with constrained von Mises-Fisher models

As a probability distribution on the high-dimensional sphere, the von Mises-Fisher (vMF) distribution is widely used for directional statistics and data analysis methods based on correlation. We consider a constrained vMF distribution for block modeling, which provides a probabilistic model of an asymmetric biclustering method that uses correlation as the similarity measure of data features. We...

Clustering on the Unit Hypersphere using von Mises-Fisher Distributions

Several large scale data mining applications, such as text categorization and gene expression analysis, involve high-dimensional data that is also inherently directional in nature. Often such data is L2 normalized so that it lies on the surface of a unit hypersphere. Popular models such as (mixtures of) multi-variate Gaussians are inadequate for characterizing such data. This paper proposes a g...
